Professional Voice Lessons and Piano Lessons for All Ages

Lessons

Philippa Smith-Tyler believes you’re never too young or old to learn piano or learn to sing. She teaches many kinds of music in her voice lessons and piano lessons, including Gospel, Classical, Jazz and Latin. She starts teaching students as early as ages 3.
Piano instruction texts include one or more of the following books: John W. Schaum Theory Lessons, Leila Fletcher Theory Papers, Scales by David Hirschberg, Scales and Arpeggio studies, Hanon Exercises, Daily Exercises by Edna Mae Burnam and Czerny Exercises. Other materials may be used depending on the musical genre and experience level of the student.
A venerable legend has become part of the folklore of music: A New Yorker (or in some versions Arthur Rubinstein) is approached in the street near Carnegie Hall, and asked, “Pardon me sir, but how do I get to Carnegie Hall?” He replies, “Practice, practice, practice.”
Similarly, Ms. Smith-Tyler expects her students to practice every day. She knows not every student is self-motivated to practice and has methods and suggestions to get them practicing.
  • Beginners under the ages of five must practice at least 10 minutes each day.
  • Beginners older than five years of ages must practice 20 minutes each day.
  • For intermediate students, 30 to 45 minutes of practice is needed per day.
  • For advanced students, one to two hours of practice is required.
All piano students must have a piano or an electric keyboard with at least five octaves in their residence. At the end of each lesson, the student’s assignment is written in an assignment book and parents are encouraged to review each assignment for an understanding of what should be accomplished between lessons.
When she moved to the islands, she continued teaching her stateside students through Zoom. Virtual lessons are available.
