Ms. Smith-Tyler has been an instructor of piano and voice for several years in the Washington, DC area and in South Florida. She earned a degree at The New England Conservatory of Music and has studied in Russia.

A protégé of renowned concert pianist and author the late Vivian Colton McBrier, Ms. Smith-Tyler’s graduate music studies include the Westminster Choir College, Maryland University, American University with the late concert pianist Evelyn Swarthout Hayes, and George Washington University with concert pianist and music critic the late Ylda Novik.

While living in Miami, Ms. Smith-Tyler performed Latin jazz with bands throughout South Florida. Some of her performance venues were Tobacco Road, the Bass Museum and the Hard Rock Café.

Currently, Ms. Smith-Tyler lives in the Washington, DC area where she teaches music in high school, middle school and elementary school. In addition to performing and teaching, Ms. Smith-Tyler is a church musician and has played music of and directed choirs for denominations from Baptist to Metaphysical, from Massachusetts to Florida.

Ms. Smith-Tyler's students have included children and grandchildren of famous artists, including concert pianist Leon Fleischer. One 8-year-old student, who had never competed before, recently placed third against more experienced competitors in a piano competition at the University of Maryland.
